Best Ultralight Hiking Tent

Naturehike Cloud-Up 2 Person Backpacking Tent

Naturehike Cloud-Up 2 Person Backpacking Tent
Our Rating
4.9

The Naturehike Cloud-Up 2 Person Backpacking Camping Tent Lightweight is slightly heavier than our previous tent at 1.5 kg.

Setting up this tent is easy! You will be done in 5 to 8 minutes. The tent pack has interlocking tent poles that has a single crossing and two way structure hooks that secure the tent.

After the setup, you’ll see that the Naturehike Cloud-Up tent has enough space for 2 people. And that doesn’t mean being cramped inside. There is literally enough room for you and your companion.

There’s only one door. It is located at the front of the tent.

The vestibule space can be used as storage for your backpacks or a place to cook your meals.

There is no question with this tent’s durability as well. The fly and floor are fully waterproof and seamed. Fixed ropes at the side of the fly helps stabilized the tent in case of strong winds.

You don’t need to worry about the ventilation as well because the walls are made of high density mesh and there are vents on the side to prevent the inside from becoming too hot or gather moisture.

By the way did I mention the Naturehike Cloud-Up Tent comes with a free mat?

This tent is affordable but doesn’t skimp on quality. It’s also available in a variety of colors. Check out their website to see other varieties!

MSR Hubba NX 1 Person Tent

MSR Hubba NX 1 Person Tent
Our Rating
4.7

The MSR Hubba NX 1 Tent has a really great design. The tent is fully symmetrical which allows you to sleep either way in the tent.

Another great thing about this tent is that it weights in at only weighs 1.3 kg.

For a 1 person tent, it is quite spacious. Because of the symmetrical design, you have more room for yourself and your belongings. You can store your big items at the vestibule or you can keep them inside

It has mesh for all around the tent for ventilation. The fly has one vent on one side and a vestibule on the other.

The tent can withstand strong winds although the walls can wobble a bit if you don’t adequately secure them with the guy lines.

High tub-like floor design ensures that water or little animals don’t find their way in to the tent.

The tent is made of high quality materials. One of which is that it has a Xtreme Shield Waterproof coating, that last 3 times longer than standard waterproof fabric.

The MSR Hubba NX 1 Tent is built to handle extreme weather so is the perfect tent to bring along if you plan to travel throughout the country.

For the price, you might cringe a little. It’s a pretty expensive tent. It has a lot of features and since it’s recently released we won’t be holding our breath for any big discounts soon.

Pros

Design – the overall design of the tent is great. It balances functionality, practicality and aesthetics.

All season – you can take this tent to the coast and enjoy the beach as well as camping in the national parks.

Light weight – at 1.3 kg, you know it won’t be any trouble to take along on your trips.

Cons

Expensive – this is by far the most expensive 1 person tent I reviewed. This is a fairly new model which does help justify the cost.

Footprint not included – you’ll have to purchase the footprint separately and I recommend that you get one for an added layer of protection.

The Alps Mountaineering Zephyr 2 Person Hiking tent is a unique tent that’s made to handle 3 seasons. This is ideal to use during the summer.

The tent is completely made of mesh. This design improves the ventilation. No more stuffy moments during hot weathers and no condensations at night too.

There are two vents in the tent. The one in front is a lot bigger than the back. It also has a stake that you can use to put up the vent.

With a total weight of 1.86 kg, this tent is very light. It can easily fit in your backpack.

The setup is fairly easy. There are only two poles to connect using the clips and sleeves. You’ll be able to finish setting up in less than 10 minutes.

The fly is also pretty easy to install. It has clips around the tent providing a full coverage. Just as it’s great during the summer, this tent can also safeguard you from the rain.

Dual side entrance doors gives easy access for everyone and there are storage mesh to put your small items in. Since there are 2 doors, there will also be 2 vestibules. The vestibule area is big enough to store your bags and boots.

Price wise, this tent is just nearing the higher than average range.

Minimal to no condensation – there’s a lot of airflow that can help reduce condensation

Modern design – Aesthetic and practical

Coverage – This tent has full coverage and can be used during the rainy season

The setup is easy. The pole-clip system is so easy even kids can do it in less than 10 minutes.

This is a 3 season tent so you can bring it to the coast or in the national parks of Australia. This could be a great beach tent as it offers a lot of ventilation.

The tent is nice and airy so you won’t feel too hot while you sleep at night.

I like the side door feature. It makes it easier to get in and out of the tent. No need to crawl around.

Zempire Atom Hiking Tent

Zempire Atom Hiking Tent
Our Rating
4.6

The Zempire Atom Hiking Tent is a versatile, lightweight and easy to set up tent that that's suitable for 3 seasons.

Set up is ridiculously easy with only one pole which acts as the spine for the tent. Extend the alloy frame pole, which also comes with a brow pole already attached in the middle. Then slide the red side of the pole through the red eyelet of the tent, and then do the same for the other side. Feed the brow pole through the remaining eyelets and clip the inner mesh onto the now arching pole. The corners then need to be pegged down and the fly is attached with velcro to the pole and also clips in to the base. The whole process should literally take around 5 minutes including pegging.

Once set up, the inside will provide a spacious 220 cm x 90 cm sleeping area on the inside, but the outside will extend to 230 cm x 180 cm thanks to the extended, sloping side panel for extra rain protection and a vestibule.

Speaking of rain, the floor is rated to withstand 10000mm while the fly is 5000mm. This means that the floor will not get damp unless it's sitting a body of water for extended periods, while the fly should be sufficient to repel most showers (although I wouldn't trust it in very heavy downpours and storms).

There are internal pockets for your belongings and a hanging hook on the ceiling for a light source.

Overall, there aren't too many extra frills and features to speak of because it's always a trade-off between weight and features. So if you're after a lightweight, durable and easy to set up 3 season tent for your solo adventures then you can't go too wrong with the Zempire Atom.

Pros

Lightweight, single pole set up

Breathable and waterproof material

Suitable for 3 seasons

Cons

Interior is lengthy but fairly narrow

Things to Consider Before Buying an Ultralight Tent

Today, we will be discussing the benefits of using a light weight tent which are more often than not designed for hikers:

Size and Weight

This is the top benefit of getting a light weight tent. Having a light weight tent will help you a lot especially if you are going long hikes. And it makes hiking a lot comfortable and more enjoyable.

If your sleeping quarters are weighing more than 3.5 kg, your back will surely feel sore in a few minutes you start walking and you’ll be suffering till you arrive at your camping destination.

The weight of a light weight tent depends on the how many people will be using it. For 2 man tents, a light weight type will weigh less than 2 kg.  Light weight tents are also small so there will be no problem packing them in your bag. You will have a lot of free space in your hiking bag or you can opt to use a smaller back pack.

If you also enjoying camping with minimalist mindset, then I definitely recommend getting a light weight tent.

Easy and Fast Setup

Because the tent is so light, there are only a few items involved in setting up. You have your tent, (corded) poles and your fly cover. Some tents include extra guy lines to help secure your tent

The poles are also made of light material, some are even made of carbon.

Light weight tents utilize pole sleeves and speed clips for a faster setup. You will be able to pitch your tent in less than 10 minutes.

Larger Vestibule and More Storage

Light weight tents don’t have a lot of room inside so manufacturers have found a way on how you can store your belongings without compromising your space.

Light weight tents have bigger vestibule space than other 2 person tents. You leave your backpack and boots in the vestibule.

There are also internal storage pockets in the tent. They can be small gear pockets or overhanging storage mesh for your small items. You won’t have to sacrifice space to be organized!

Better Ventilation

Since a light weight tent is smaller in size that would mean less air flow. Wrong. There are a lot of light weight tents that have mesh around the walls which helps circulate the air inside.

There are other tents that also have vents incorporated in the walls that helps reduce condensation.

Durability

There is a misconception that light weight tents are made of low quality materials but that is not true. Actually it’s the opposite. Because of its small size, high quality materials were used to make the tents to ensure that the camper will be comfortable and well protected. Think of like a cyclists bike frame.

The light weight tent’s walls are steam sealed to prevent leaks from getting in the tent. This is especially helpful during the rainy season. There are even several light weight tents that have doubled walls. This helps with the vapor coming in the tent and keeps everything dry inside.

The tub-like floors also helps keep you dry during downpours.

Light weight tents materials are more or less waterproof and are able to withstand 2-3 weather conditions. There are even some tents can handle 4 seasons! Talk about hard core.

Even by its small size, a hiking tent can protect you from harsh conditions.

All these benefits seem too good to be true but let’s talk about some disadvantages with these tents.

Price

Because these types of tents are made with high quality materials this would mean that you will have to shell out more money to buy one.

You will be paying for the quality of the materials, comfort and the lightness of the product.

I understand that we can’t all afford this kind of tent. Please bare in mind that it’s a good thing to spend more one time rather than paying for something that costs less but needs constant maintenance or replacement. Not only do you waste your money but you also waste a lot of time and effort.
