Things To Consider When Buying A Double Swag

There are some important things to keep in mind before splurging on a swag. This depends on your personal needs. Like, how often you plan to use your swag, and the conditions you are planning on camping in. Here are some important things to consider.

Material

Comparing the materials different swags are made from can get a little bit confusing. The most important things to consider in terms of the canvas is whether the material is made from cotton or if it is synthetic and the weight of the canvas in GSM.

The thicker the canvas the better insulation and weatherproofing you get but the heavier it is. If you aren’t expecting to camp in conditions that require a lot of weather-proofing and insulation you may want to opt for the lighter option. Swags which are lighter tend to be easier to transport.

Another aspect to consider is the flooring. This is something that is mainly up to personal preference. There are two options to choose from; PVC and heavy canvas.

The PVC won’t be as durable as the heavy canvas but is completely waterproof. The heavy canvas is more durable than the PVC but not as waterproof. The best heavy canvas to have as a base is the  Australian rip-stop cotton canvas at around 430 GSM.

It is also important to check the zippers that are used in the swag. The best zippers to have are the number 10 heavy-duty YKK spiral or coil zippers.

Transporting and Storing your Swag

Depending on where you plan on storing your swag you may require a swag bag. Some swags are sold with a swag bag, but for others, you may need to purchase one separately. Swag bags protect your swag from dust and rain which is important if you plan to store your swag outside.

This may also be important if you have purchased a larger swag. These swags may need to be transported to your camping site on the roof of your vehicle. Having a swag bag can prevent you from having a wet and uncomfortable swag to sleep in.

Some swags may be too big to take in your vehicle and will require a roof rack. You should keep this in mind before buying your swag.

Mattress

The thickness of the mattress is important for comfort but it is also an important thing to consider when it comes to packing up your swag. Thicker swags have a larger roll-up size. This may be inconvenient if you are looking for a swag that can be packed up compactly.

Mattress foam can come in a variety of styles. There are two main types of foam; the egg crate style foam and the ripple style foam. However, this is up to personal preference. Different styles of foam can have different breathability and [heat retention](https://www.tuck.com/make-memory-foam-mattress-sleep-cooler/#:~:text=Memory foam retains more body, poorly rested when morning comes.). Some mattresses can also be self-inflating which can make packing up and setting up the mattress easier because they are more lightweight and compact. Some campers may also opt to purchase a self-inflating pillow for added comfort.

Traditional vs Dome Swag

Traditional swags are swags that are more rectangular in shape. They are easier to roll up, pack and transport and are usually less expensive than dome swags. This will save you some time setting up your swag, however, you will have to sacrifice some of the amount of room you have in the swag.

Alternatively, dome swags provide much more space than the traditional swag, but are often heavier and take more time to set up. They also come with ventilation and mesh which can stop insects, snakes, and vermin from entering the swag. This would be a better alternative for claustrophobic people.

Dome swags can also be more convenient since they can sometimes have more than one entry point. On the other hand, traditional swags only have one entry point which can be less convenient if you are sharing a tent and need to move freely in and out of the swag.

Dome swags also keep the canvas off your face. They also provide more headroom which is a common complaint with the traditional swag design.

The Pole

Some poles that are used to keep up the swag are foldable. This makes it easier to pack up and transport, however, adjustable poles can be a pain to deal with. Sometimes these poles require more than one person to set up.

The Mesh

Sometimes the gaps in the mesh on the swags is too big and can allow insects to pass in to the swag. Make sure that the mesh has an appropriate hole size and strength. The mesh has to be both effective and durable.

The Set-up Process

Swags can sometimes be difficult to set up. They can have awkward sleeves and sometimes it is difficult to feed the poles through. Some swags have poles that need to be set up internally or have more than three poles which can be extremely infuriating and inconvenient.

Are you willing to deal with a swag that is difficult to set up? You should keep that in mind when purchasing your swag.
